Grant awarded by the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital for preliminary work on a flow sensor for tracheostomy tubes.
Based upon needs expressed on a periodic basis through the PED-Lung internet list serve, and interest in creating a solution via the PMDI process, Joe Tamez, MD, and Al Wicks, PhD, collaborated on a grant proposal to develop a novel air flow sensor that overcomes most of the challenges in using current methods to monitor infants and children with critical airways. This acoustic sensor will be based upon time of flight principles, and proof of concept has been completed. PMDI facilitated the grant application process, and has continued to monitor and manage this funded project. Dr. Tamez is a pediatric pulmonologist at the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, and Dr. Wicks is associate professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Several Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students will participate in this exciting project.

Transducer flowAn acoustic signal is sent from one transducer to the other transducer. The time of flight of the signal is dependent on the direction and velocity of the flow in the tube.
